What ‘Holistic Admissions Review’ Really Means (And What It Doesn’t)
“Don’t worry,” they say. “Admissions committees will take a holistic review of your application.”
If you’re applying to law or medical school, chances are you’ve heard this term more times than you can count. While the idea might be comforting, as it implies you’re more than your numbers (which is true), a holistic admissions approach is often misunderstood.
As former admissions professionals, we want to demystify what really goes on behind the scenes, and what you can do to stand out in a holistic review process.
What Holistic Admissions Actually Means
Schools who take a holistic approach to the admissions process evaluate your full story, not just your GPA or test scores. This includes:
Academic record and trajectory
Standardized test scores (yes, still important!)
Personal statement and essays
Letters of recommendation
Work, service, research, or leadership experience
Life circumstances, background, or adversity
Fit with the school’s mission and values
Strength of interview
"Legacy" or deep ties to a university or program
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about showing authenticity, maturity, and alignment with what the school values.
What It Doesn’t Mean
Holistic admissions doesn’t mean:
Stats don’t matter (they do! schools still have quotas to meet and rankings to maintain).
You can make up for major gaps with one great essay.
Everyone has an equal shot regardless of qualifications.
Law and med schools still rely on metrics to manage volume. Holistic review comes after you’ve cleared a basic academic threshold. The more competitive the school, the higher that threshold tends to be.
What You Can Control
Here’s the good news: many of the most powerful elements in your application are 100% in your hands.
Craft a compelling, specific personal statement.
Choose recommenders who know you well.
Showcase meaningful, consistent experience (not just a long list).
Use every optional essay or addendum to provide valuable context.
Demonstrate alignment with the mission of each school.
Interview with confidence, clarity, and strength.
And most importantly, don’t try to be who you think they want. Show them who you are.
