More Than Admissions: The Story Behind GradMissions
Every year, we watch students step into one of the most competitive—and confusing—processes of their lives: applying to law or medical school. On paper, it looks straightforward. In reality, it’s anything but.
At GradMissions, we’ve built something intentionally different. Not just a service, but a team—and more importantly, a philosophy—rooted in care, strategy, and deep experience. This post pulls back the curtain on how GradMissions came to be, who makes up the team, and why our approach works.
Where It All Started
GradMissions began with a simple but powerful realization: students deserve better guidance.
After 16 years working inside law and medical school admissions, founder Autumn Lockett saw firsthand where applicants struggled. Not because they weren’t capable, but because they weren’t being guided in a way that reflected who they actually were or what they truly needed.
Traditional admissions roles often come with limitations. You can advise, but only within a structure. You can support, but not always deeply or individually.
GradMissions was built to remove those limitations.
At its core is a commitment to ethical, personalized guidance by meeting students where they are and helping them build an application strategy that actually makes sense for their goals, background, and timeline.
Building a Team That Feels Different
If you’ve ever worked with GradMissions, you’ve probably felt it: this isn’t a one-size-fits-all operation.
Autumn often describes the team like the “Care Bear Stare”, each member bringing a distinct strength, but working together toward the same outcome: student success.
Lizanne Carlson, a former Associate Dean of Admissions and attorney, was the first to join. As a first-generation law student herself, she brings both technical expertise and lived understanding to every client she works with.
Logan Lockett leads the medical side, with experience spanning MD programs through residency applications. She understands the full arc of the medical journey, and how to position students for long-term success.
Morgan Hager supports law clients with a background in career services and big law recruiting, helping students connect admissions strategy with future outcomes.
Together, the team offers something rare: insight from every side of the process: admissions, recruiting, and student experience.
Why Personalized Guidance Matters
One of the biggest misconceptions about law and medical school admissions is that there’s a “formula.”
There isn’t.
GradMissions works with a wide range of clients:
Students aiming for top-tier programs
Applicants pursuing part-time or regional schools
Nontraditional students navigating career changes
First-generation students figuring it out as they go
What they all have in common is this: they need a strategy that reflectsthem, not a template.
That’s why the work goes far beyond editing personal statements or building school lists. It’s about:
Identifying strengths that may not be obvious on paper
Addressing gaps or concerns proactively
Building confidence in how students present themselves
Creating a cohesive, compelling narrative
And perhaps most importantly, it’s about building relationships. Students aren’t just clients, they’re people navigating a high-stakes, emotional process.
Services Designed for Real Life
GradMissions offers two primary ways students can engage, depending on their needs and timeline:
Admissions Accelerator
A focused, high-impact session (60 minutes) paired with one month of follow-up support. Ideal for students who need clarity, direction, and a strategic plan.
Curated Application Experience (CAE)
A comprehensive, hands-on approach with regular one-on-one calls, covering every aspect of the application process, from early planning through the first semester of law or medical school.
Both options are rooted in the same philosophy: start early, build intentionally, and don’t leave your future to guesswork. Read about former clients' experiences here.
The Role of Family and Community
One thing we talk about often, but isn’t discussed enough in admissions, is the role of support systems.
Parents, partners, and loved ones want to help, but they’re often navigating unfamiliar territory. The admissions landscape has changed, and the pressure can feel overwhelming for everyone involved.
GradMissions steps into that space as both a guide and a translator:
Providing clarity around decisions and trade-offs
Creating a sense of shared support rather than stress
Because no one should have to navigate this process alone.
Why Starting Early Changes Everything
If there’s one takeaway we emphasize again and again, it’s this:
Starting early isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing things well.
When students begin in the spring or summer before they apply, they have time to:
Reflect on their story
Strengthen key areas of their application
Build a thoughtful, balanced school list
Approach the process with confidence instead of urgency
By the time applications open, they’re not scrambling, they’re ready.
